What Are 3 Causes of Lower Back Pain?

The 3 most common causes of lower back pain are:

  1. Misalignment (subluxation) of one or more segments in the spine
  2. Strain/sprain of the muscles, ligaments, or tendons in the spine
  3. Spinal degeneration (arthritis)

Subluxations can occur in any joint and have 5 components or parts.

Subluxation Complex Component #1: Kinesiopathology

The spine’s bones are designed to move while protecting the spinal cord and nerve roots. However, stress can cause one or more of the vertebrae in the spine to become “stuck.” When one segment in the spine becomes “stuck,” the joints above and below that segment can become hypermobile, meaning they move too much. Too much motion in any joint can lead to increased “wear and tear,” which is another term for Arthritis.

This part of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex is found by evaluating posture, studying X-rays, and orthopedic testing.

Subluxation Complex Component #2: Neuropathophysiology

When the bones in the spine stop functioning properly, delicate nerve tissue can become irritated. Nerve tissue is very similar to brain tissue, which is the most sensitive tissue in the body. In fact, just 10 to 15 mm of pressure can alter nerve function. That is just the weight of a dime!

An actual “pinched” nerve is actually very uncommon. More commonly, spinal nerves are irritated by improper spinal function. This lack of motion causes inflammation that can irritate nerve tissueBecause nerves are the primary means of communication between the brain and the rest of the body, this can affect the body’s overall functioning.

Subluxation Complex Component #3: Myopathology

Because bones are static structures and only move when acted upon by muscles. When joints are inflamed or irritated, the muscles surrounding them can become tight, acting as a splint.

When nerve function is impaired, the muscles supporting the spine can become weak and atrophy. The reverse can also occur from overstimulation, when muscles become tight and spasm.

In either situation, damaged tissue can become fibrotic (scar tissue), changing the elasticity of the affected muscles. Repeated adjustments are often necessary to make lasting spinal changes. The changes in muscle function explain why chronic spinal problems can take longer to rehabilitate than acute injuries.

Subluxation Complex Component #4: Histopathology

Loss of proper motion of the discs, ligaments, and other connective tissues can cause inflammation, edema, and swelling. These changes can be felt in the tissue. Because discs and ligaments do not have good blood supply, they are slow to heal when injured.

Subluxation Complex Component #5: Pathophysiology

When a joint is injured and stops functioning properly, the body stabilizes the area (arthritis). These changes can also put pressure on spinal nerves, causing radiating pain and numbness.

Phase One of Arthritis: Changes in the curves in the spine and decreased range of motion.

Phase Two: Narrowing of the disc space and “spurring” of the top and bottom of the vertebrae. When bone is stressed, it causes increased bone growth. It is seen naturally when the skeleton forms and unnaturally when there is aberrant motion.

Phase Three: Immobilization of the joint, which can eventually result in fusion of the segments in the spine. Regular chiropractic care can help improve joint function and help slow or even stop this degenerative process.
